Bonding
If you have chipped or cracked teeth or small gaps between your
front teeth, you may be a candidate for bonding. Bonding is also
used for patients who have discolored teeth, uneven teeth, gum recession
and tooth decay.
Bonding can replace
leaking, worn, fractured or ugly silver fillings. The result is
a more beautiful appearance while strengthening the tooth against
fracture and splitting due to a bonded unit of fill and tooth. There
is some evidence that replacement of silver fillings may also improve
your systemic health.
The Bonding Procedure
Bonding is using a composite resin filling to repair
small chips in the front teeth, restore decayed teeth, make cosmetic
improvements and reshape minor crooked teeth. The doctor begins
by selecting a shade of composite resin (bonding
material) closest to the shade of your natural teeth. The tooth
is then cleaned and conditioned so an applied liquid can help the
bonding material stick to the teeth. The composite
resin is then applied to the teeth, and sculpted into the desired
shape and hardened with a high intensity light. After the resin
has hardened, final shaping and polishing the tooth will match your
natural teeth in shape and color. Bonded restorations
normally will last for years, but with any procedure that time is
optimum with excellent home care.
